Preservation & Stewardship
Sod School House Cemetery exists today because generations of families and community members cared enough to preserve it for those who would come after them.
Over many years, portions of the cemetery have deteriorated due to aging infrastructure, weather, lost records, damaged markers, and limited long-term resources. Our current efforts are focused on responsibly restoring, preserving, and documenting the cemetery so that future generations may continue to honor and locate those buried here.
Current preservation efforts include:
– Repair and stabilization of damaged headstones
– Preservation and improvement of fencing and cemetery infrastructure
– Identification and documentation of unmarked or deteriorated graves
– Development of a long-term cemetery mapping and plot identification system
– Digital preservation of historical records, photographs, and family stories
– Ongoing maintenance and stewardship of the cemetery grounds
Our long-term goal is to create a sustainable preservation system that protects both the physical cemetery and the historical records connected to it.
As part of these efforts, Sod School House Cemetery is developing an organized burial and mapping system designed to help preserve grave locations and cemetery records for generations to come. This work will assist families, historians, and future caretakers in locating and identifying graves long into the future.
